Meerut remained tense on Saturday after a Dalit woman was killed while trying to prevent the abduction of her daughter in a village on the city’s outskirts. Police have intensified security in the area and launched a search for the missing woman and the accused. Protests and condemnation, however, continue to grow.

What happened in Kapsad village

According to the police, the incident took place in Kapsad village in Meerut. The 50-year-old woman was walking with her 20-year-old daughter when a group of men allegedly tried to abduct the younger woman.

When the mother intervened, the attackers struck her on the head with a sharp weapon. Despite being badly injured, she continued trying to shield her daughter. The effort failed. The attackers fled after forcibly taking the young woman with them.

The injured mother was rushed to hospital but died during treatment.

Police said five teams have been formed to trace the accused and recover the abducted woman. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the law, and investigations are ongoing.

Political reactions and police action

The killing has drawn strong reactions from opposition leaders, who have linked the crime to what they describe as worsening law and order in Uttar Pradesh.

Senior Congress leader Udit Raj wrote on X: “In the Kapsad village of Meerut, a Dalit woman had stepped out of her home with her daughter to go to the fields when, on the way, goons from Yogi Ji’s community tried to kidnap her daughter. When the mother tried to stop them, they murdered her and abducted the daughter.”

He added: “Nearly 48 hours have passed since this incident, but nothing has been found out yet. Incidents of Dalit oppression have increased a lot in UP. Did they run bulldozers on the homes of the accused and their relatives? It’s a glimpse of what will happen even before a Hindu nation is formed.”

Samajwadi Party MLA Atul Pradhan also condemned the incident, saying: “There can be no greater sorrow than this. Just imagine the kind of system and mindset those goons had. When a mother was going to the fields with her daughter, the miscreants abducted the girl and brutally killed the woman.”

He said the woman was still alive when she was taken to the hospital, but her condition was critical.

“Think about it, what could be more horrific than this?”

SP leader Yogesh Verma told IANS: “This incident is extremely painful and shocking. It has deeply disturbed the entire Dalit community of the district. Such a brutal act must be addressed, and those responsible must be taught a lesson by the government… This kind of lawlessness must be stopped. By now, the administration should have reached the accused persons’ houses with bulldozers.”

Police have identified the accused as Paras Som and Sunil Kumar, both residents of the same village. Further details are awaited.
